More than three cups of coffee a day can cause blindness

Are you a heavy coffee drinker? A latest study from Jae Hee Kang , Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, he found that caffeinated coffee drinks have higher chance of developing vision loss or blindness. Exfoliation glaucoma would be the consequence of caffeine overdose, and women with family history of glaucoma are at an increased risk.

Australia has a traditionally strong coffee culture began with European immigrants. According to the coffee consumption statistics, Australian’s consumption per capita increased from 1.2kg to 2.4kg, it has doubled over past 30 years. Though it is hard for people stop drinking coffee if it has already become a part of their daily routine, why don’t you drink a cup of coffee a day, and make tea be a substitute for coffee. Because in this study, the researcher didn’t find associations with consumption of other caffeinated drinks, like tea, chocolate, soda and decaffeinated coffee.

    • Hi Justin, because coffee could increase pressure within the eyeball, when pressure builds up, it can damage the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, and the nerve fibres from the retina. Hope this make sense to you, and YES decaffeinated coffee is absolutely a better choice!

  1. Oh no! I’m a coffee addict, I’ll have to start drinking decaf! This is a really interesting blog – eye health is rarely discussed! Doe’s the sun also affect your eye health?

  2. I am not an avid coffee drinker at all but I was surprised to hear that coffee is bad for the eyes. I drink tea all the time though which I suppose is a lot healthier.

At least if people don’t drink as much coffee, less disposable cups will be thrown on the ground. That’s one good thing that can come of it.
